The desert shoreline of Devon Island (Lancaster Sound) as viewed from the deck of Akademik Ioffe.
A passenger watches as the eroded cliffs of this barren landscape unfold before us and then slip silently away. This timeless land of rock and ice imprints itself on the mind - A truly alien world, uninviting, even hostile, yet inexplicably captivating. The elements of this composition are strikingly juxtaposed, though hidden within are similarities of form that hint of some underlying connection. A mysterious schematic of creation echoes in the braided tresses patterns cut deep into the ancient stone. It is a moment of serendipity, or synchronicity perhaps, in which a gust of wind tussles the hair creating a very specific rhythm within the composition - Eroded cliffs and crumbling scree flow almost seamlessly into auburn hair. I see this painting as a visual poem. Symmetries in shape and form reveal the underlying patterns of creation. Various other parallels can be drawn; art, in this case, imitates life - an attempt to explain the mysterious allure of this desolate arctic landscape.
