Thirty years ago, when I first flew to Canada with my family, the first image that lodged itself in my mind was the view from our airplane as we cruised high above the mountains and ice fields of Greenland. That image became synonymous with the excitement and anticipation of beginning a new life in a far away land. Many times since I've looked down on that vast icy landscape and wondered what this mysterious world must actually be like. In late July, 2006, I finally had my answer. As my friends and I sat on the hotel patio looking out over Uummannaq Fjord it seemed as though a large part of my life had suddenly come full circle; there, in the 'southern' sky, were the jet streams of those same aircraft. As they traced their way back and forth across the horizon I wondered who might be look down at us - I saw myself, 12 years old again, wondering what this adventure we were embarking on held in store.
