A piece that compelled me to break one of the cardinal rules of composition: the horizon line of a landscape should be approximately one third in from either the top or the bottom of the canvas. Sometimes, however, breaking the rules can create a tension or effect that works to illustrate a point. In this painting, which is somewhat more stylistic than the others, I portray the apparently separate worlds of land and sea. This division emphasized by creating a horizon which bisects the composition, quite intentionally, through the center. The world above, reflected in the water below, alludes to the inter-connectedness of both. The two people in a canoe, though very much in this world, are supported, literally and figuratively, by the waters beneath them. |
