An allegorical piece inspired by native creation myths and the elemental landscape of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Mother Earth, personified here as a young woman (the nurturer, giver of shape and form) is going about life in her bountiful, unspoiled world (a garden almost). The Trickster, a creation deity, portrayed in the northern and central western cultures as The Raven, is just one other aspect of Maya - that of illusion. By playing his tricks and causing conflict he forces people into situations which on the surface appear negative, yet may ultimately lead to revelations and new insight - a native god "working in mysteries ways". Strong horizontal lines emphasize the suspense in this encounter at the rivers edge. |
